Okay. No need to panic. So maybe she fell asleep while waiting for Vicky? But... her dreams weren't usually so vivid. Like, everything was colourful, loud, and she could feel the wind on her skin. Her arms were covered with goosebumps and she had a feeling that if she were to pinch herself, it would hurt. Besides, it wasn't likely that she fell asleep, since she hadn't even sat down. She shuddered at the thought of bugs crawling over her as she slept unaware in the grass. Yeah, gross...

So, maybe something unexpected hit her in the head hard? Yeah, that was pretty unlikely as well. She groaned, glanced down at her clothing momentarily and then set off. She may as well try and figure out where she was. Maybe she was hallucinating? What would that be a symptom of anyway? Some form of brain damage? She shook her head firmly, shutting off her thoughts on that matter.

Something crackled behind her, like the sound of a stick breaking. It's only the wind, she told herself firmly. She wasn't going to freak out here, when she was by herself with no idea where she was. No need to panic, she reminded herself. Everything's fine. "Vicky! Please... come out," she murmured the last part, cursing her best friend for deciding to leave her alone. Of course, it had to be Vicky's fault.

When she broke into the field, which had that fresh air/grassy smell, she frowned. This didn't look even vaguely familiar to her. Just where the hell am I?! She stopped, her hands crossed over her chest uneasily as she looked around. It wasn't a large clearing, almost like a break between the trees. She was still surrounded by the woods, and noticed that the path continued through the field and back into the forest. She continued on, hoping to find someone to ask for help. Preferably someone kind too, not some creepy old man or something.

Though, in a forest like this, she had doubts of finding anyone at all - creepy old man or not.

Victoria kept to the centre of the path, her weapon clutched close to her chest. She could feel herself shaking as she made her way along. She swallowed again and forced herself to calm down, taking deeper breaths and bringing her arms down. Her ears were straining, trying to pick out something other than her own footsteps. Every so often, she would look over her shoulder to see if anything was following. Nothing ever was, though.

She let out a shaky breath and quickened her pace. Her eyes were getting used to the darkness. She could define one tree from another. She could see further down the path. She chanced a look upwards. The branches she could see were unmoving and no light filtered through.

She caught the inside of her lip between her teeth, chewing on it as she came to a fork. "Oh dear," she murmured, staring down each path. Neither gave any indication as to which led the way out. Going on impulse, she started down the right. She wasn't going to think about the consequences.

"Ugh... how long has it been?" Sierra mumbled to herself, looking for the setting sun. It was to her right, which meant that on her right was west. Therefore, she must be heading south. She mentally thanked Vicky for giving her those lessons not that long ago. She always mixed up whether the sun rose or set in the east or west. Of course, there was always the NESW (Never Eat Shredded Wheat) to go by as well. That thought brought a small smile to the girl's face.

Okay, so the sun was still setting. It had been setting when Vicky and Sierra went for a walk as well, as it had been close to eight in the evening. She would guess that it was the same time here, considering the limited light the setting sun was giving onto the sky. She didn't have much time left until dark. She felt her heart clench in momentary fear. What if she was stuck here in this forest all night? What if some creepy animal attacked her once the sun went down?

No... she shook her head firmly, erasing such thoughts from her mind. Not panicking, remember? She told herself. She'd been walking for a while now, and there was still no sign of people. Not that she'd truly expected to see anyone, but still. The path began to slant upwards, getting slightly rockier instead of a dirt path.

Was... was that a building she saw? No way... in the middle of a forest? She couldn't help the hope that flared in her chest at the mere sight and she disregarded the 'no trespassing' signs posted around her as she continued up the hill.

Vicky was getting tired. The fear of something coming after her kept her mostly alert, but she had started to slouch. She didn't know how long she'd been walking, there was no way to tell and she'd forgotten to put on her watch before she left the house. Her heels were starting to hurt from poor choice of footwear.

Deciding she needed a break, she veered off to the largest tree she could see and sat upon its roots. Her weapon-turned-walking stick rested on her lap. She stared at the ground, taking note of the fine, almost sandy like dirt. It reminded her of the north, and the day where her grandmother's ashes were buried.

She had watched her cousins dig the hole, noticing that the dirt was actually sand. She had stood silently while they set it up and waited for the cemetery minister to arrive. She had listened to the stories that others remembered and wished she could as well. She was one of the last to put her own handful of sand into the hole. At that moment, she remembered that she couldn't cry. She watched her aunts cry, she watched her cousins cry. And she felt ashamed that she couldn't do the same. Even now, she felt no tears burn the corners of her eyes.

She leaned back against the tree, looking at the motionless leaves. Nothing had any colour, she noticed. And with the absence of light, she wondered how there were any leaves in the first place. Her nose wrinkled as her thoughts turned scientific. She was tired.

That thought brought a wave of exhaustion over her and she looked around her tree. The path was good enough for her purpose, she decided. She slid to the side and down to the dirt, placing the branch next to her. Her head rested on the tree behind her and she closed her eyes. Escape from the forest could wait until later.

As she grew closer to the looming building, she noticed the tall metal bars surrounding it. A large gate blocked the entrance, and she fought a wave of familiarity. I've... seen this before? she asked herself with a frown. To the right of the building was a familiar slant, a hill where she could also remember seeing.

Two people were standing on either side of the large gate, dressed in some sort of purple uniforms. They both wore silver helmets and neither were smiling. Sierra swallowed hard and slowly approached them. It was getting dark, so they probably hadn't spotted her yet. They looked dangerous. The whole building looked dangerous and she fought a feeling telling her to run away. She'd never know where she was if she ran now, right? So making up her mind, she approached the two guards.

"Excuse me," she began but her voice was too quiet and they wouldn't have been able to hear her even if they were right beside her. She was about to try again when she felt a tight grip on her wrist suddenly and was dragged away from the building.

"What the...!" she demanded, trying to free herself as she caught a glimpse of silver and blue. It was darker now, so it was hard to make out her attacker.

She wasn't released until they were out of sight from the two guards and when the person turned to her, Sierra nearly fainted. No... no way. No frigging way!

"Are you an idiot?" Genis hissed, glaring at the human that he had pulled away. "You could've been captured! What do you think you're doing?" She was staring at him in awe, her mouth gaping like a fish. He scoffed and turned away, grabbing her wrist again as he walked away from the ranch. "C'mon, we've got to get out of here," he led her away from the gates, turning to head back home.

Oh my God. Oh my fucking God. Oh my GOD. Oh my - calm down, Sierra scolded herself, taking a couple of deep breaths and resisting the urge to scream out loud. That does it. She had to be dreaming now. GENIS frigging SAGE was in front of her, walking in front of her. With his silver hair, blue eyes, cute blue outfit, she really had to hold back from cuddling him. He had always been her favourite, right from day one. He was just so adorable and very witty. He always made her laugh. Her favourite line in the entire game would always be the "Ha-ha, you got re-ject-ed!" that Genis had said to Lloyd. She'd cracked right up.

Genis was such a cutie. And now he was in front of her, had glared at her, and called her an idiot.

Oh man. Sierra glanced down at her wrist. She could feel his hand gripping her. This couldn't be a dream. There was no way she'd be feeling everything so... real if it were. But... that meant...

Holyshitnoway... I'm in SYLVARANT?!! Sierra felt herself sway slightly and shook her head to regain her balance. She couldn't pass out. That wouldn't be a very good first impression. But seriously? She was in Tales of Symphonia? Then that building back there... and why it was so familiar? And Genis being there... it had been the Iselia Human Ranch. Oh God! That was impossible, though, right?

So there was no other explanation. She had to be dreaming. Well, might as well go along with then, right? "Uh... t-thank you," she mumbled quietly. Had he heard her? Did she need to repeat herself? She cursed herself for feeling shy now of all times. But it kind of felt like she was meeting someone famous, like a celebrity or something. She inwardly snorted at the idea of asking Genis for his autograph. Wouldn't that make him think she was crazy...

Genis glanced back briefly as he felt the girl sway and back again when she shook her head. Really, he had no idea what he was doing. If she was stupid enough to get that close then it was her fault if she got captured. He sighed, Lloyd was rubbing off on him.

He hummed in reply to her murmured thanks, stopping as they neared the river. "Look," he started, placing his hands on his hips, "I don't know what was going through your head but if you do that again, I'm not helping you."

Sierra frowned. She had to get over a momentary urge to hug him again, as he looked so much like the real Genis Sage. She inwardly winced. He is the real Genis Sage, she corrected herself in amusement. "Ah, yeah, I know," she muttered. Really, how was she supposed to know that was the Human Ranch in frigging Iselia?

How the hell was she supposed to know she was even IN Iselia? Of course, Genis wouldn't know that. So now what? She was standing in front of a supposedly fictional game character, in said game - or dreaming at any rate - so what should she do now? Should she go with him to Iselia? She had to pass some time until she woke up, right?

But... what would she do in Iselia? Genis was obviously going home, probably for the night. Lloyd was already home, probably. Colette as well. She didn't even know what point during the game this was. It was clearly before the village got attacked, but during the time when Genis had met Marble at the ranch.

Ahh... what should I do?! Make friends with Genis? At least he knows how to fight, and do magic, and can keep her safe from the scary things that go bump in the night? Maybe she could go with him, since she had no idea where else she was supposed to go to sleep. It was night time, after-all, the sun having completely disappeared while Genis was leading her here. "So, what's your name?" she asked, chewing her cheek thoughtfully and cursing herself for her quiet voice.

Nonetheless, he heard her.

Well that's slightly rude, was the first though that ran through Genis' head. "Genis Sage," he replied anyway and started to cross the bridge. The girl continued to stand there as if she didn't know what to do. He stopped half way over. "Well?" he gave her an exasperated look.

Well what?! Sierra thought in slight panic. Does he want me to follow him? When he continued to stare at her, his eyes basically glaring at her, she swallowed and took a couple of steps after him. He turned back around so she figured she didn't screw up. "Ah, I..." she cleared her throat, "I'm Sierra. Sierra Reynolds," her voice was slightly louder this time and she inwardly congratulated herself.

She could see the small town fast approaching and swallowed hard. Where would she go from there? She was starting to feel a flurry of panic in her chest, as she knew somehow that this wasn't a dream. As crazy as it sounds, she'd somehow ended up in Tales of Symphonia. Whenever she had dreams, she always knew that they were dreams. She never had to question it. Therefore, this must NOT be a dream. Damn. She clenched her shaking hands into fists to try and calm herself as she stared at the half elf in front of her still.

Sierra's stomach clenched with fear. A little town called Paris, Ontario. Ever hear of it? Yeah I didn't think so... Shit. Now what? She could say she was a traveler? But if they ran into a monster... the fact that she had no idea how to fight, and no weapons, well, that would prove her a liar wouldn't it?

If she said she was from Triet, then how would she explain why she was in Iselia Forest, at the Iselia Human Ranch? She could say her brother was taken there? But that was a major lie... And besides, how would she have survived the trip from Triet to Iselia on her own, with no weapon? Not likely.

Genis was obviously waiting for an answer but before she could settle with anything, she was suddenly thrown to the ground as a large, rabid wolf leaped on her. She screamed, thrusting her hands up to cover her face from the dog's sharp teeth. Go away, go away, go away! She let out another shriek, trying to shove the wolf off of her futilely. His teeth grazed her arms painfully and she cried out.

Shit! She rolled, managing to kick the dog away from her as she landed on her stomach a few feet away. She sat up, holding her arms to her chest for some sort of protection and watched as Genis began to attack the creature.

The ball of his kendama flew out and struck the wolf on the side of its face. It yelped as it was hit in the eye, turning away and shaking its head. Immediately, he began chanting for Fireball, releasing the spell right when it turned back. It cried out, howling as its fur was singed and Genis decided to take the time to escape. He pulled at Sierra's arm, helping her up as best as he could. He pressed an apple gel into her palm as they started to run.

Sierra stumbled a bit, but Genis' hand on her arm kept her from falling. She looked at the Apple Gel in her hand and frowned. It was safe, right? She always hated any form of medicine, but this was probably something more natural than the stuff she was forced to take at home.

It was supposed to raise a character's health in the game, so it probably made them feel better. She twisted the lid with one hand awkwardly and lifted it to her mouth. Squeezing her eyes shut nervously, she drank it. It was warm and thick, somewhat like medicine except with a fruitier taste. She swallowed the last of it and licked her lips. It tasted all right; better than she'd expected.

A tingling sensation came over her arms, so she assumed the Apple Gel must be working it's magic. Cool. She kept the empty bottle in her hand as she stumbled along behind Genis. Blah. She hated running. She couldn't help but glance over her shoulder to see if the wolf was following them. It wasn't - good. Genis slowed down to her relief and she followed suit, wiping her face absently. She hadn't realized she had cried. It must have been when the wolf was attacking her and she'd thought she was going to die.

"T-thanks, again, Genis," Sierra gasped, shaking. Shit. Shit, shit, shit. What would she have done if Genis hadn't of been there? Oh man. In the game, all she had to do was hit buttons. Easy as pie, right? Man. She owed the half elf, well, her life now. That was twice he'd saved her from certain death or worse.

I want out of here!

"No problem," Genis replied, watching the shaking girl. She was obviously scared out of her wits and her reactions ruled out the option that she was a traveler. Her hesitation earlier also meant that she didn't know or didn't want to answer the question. Nonetheless, he had to help her.

With a sigh, he gestured for her to follow, "Let's go, I'll take you back to my place and my sister can take a look at you. She's a healer."

"Thank you," Sierra said again as she nodded. Genis was already walking away, so she quickly followed. Well, that was one problem solved. Though, she still needed an answer to his earlier question. Where had she come from?

She obviously couldn't say the truth. He'd put her in a mental home (if they had those in Sylvarant). Regardless, the truth must remain with her only. She wasn't all that good at lying, nor was she a good secret-keeper. But if she wanted to survive through this, then she'd figure out a cover story and make something up.

It's what all the self-inserts did, right? Of course, she didn't know if she could call this a self-insert or not, since for all she knew - and hoped - she really could be dreaming. So she'd think of something. Hopefully Genis would be patient and let her ponder as to what.

She'd need to come up with something before she met Raine, though, for the older woman was naturally suspicious of most people and wouldn't trust Sierra right away. Sierra gulped discreetly.

They'd entered the village by this point and Genis immediately turned to the left. Sierra followed him wordlessly. She could never remember the way to any of their houses. Vicky was so much better at navigating and remembering than Sierra was. Sierra had a terrible memory, especially when it came to directions.

Before she could continue her thoughts, going in further to explain her horrible map reading skills as well, a sudden thought struck her. Amnesia! She could feign amnesia. If she didn't remember where she was from, then she didn't need to answer Genis' question! Sure, it was still suspicious, but it explained her lack of knowing where she was or knowing how to fight.

She could say she just woke up in the Iselia forest? Or was that too suspicious? But what else could she say? Maybe she could put in a half-truth? She could say she'd been with her friend but had gotten separated. They were attacked and Sierra must have been hit in the head. When she came to, Vicky was gone and Sierra was alone with no idea where she was or why she was there.

Yes! It'll work! she thought in excitement, nearly smiling. She composed herself just in time as Genis stopped in front of his house, opening the door to let her in first.

Raine looked up from her book as the door opened, letting in a strange girl followed by her brother. She frowned and stood up, removing her glasses and placing them on the book.

"Genis, what's going on? Who's this?" her brother closed the door behind him, gesturing for the girl to sit before turning to her.

"I was coming back from Lloyd's house when I saw her wander over to the ranch," he said, looking up at her. "I managed to get her away before she was spotted though. Says her name's Sierra Reynolds, though I can't say I've ever heard of it," Genis looked back to the girl, Sierra, and Raine did the same. She was nervous and she was staring at them apprehensively, as if she was scared of what they would do. Her clothes were suspicious and Raine had to say that she'd never seen that type of shoe before.

"Did she say where she was from?" Raine asked, keeping her eye on the stranger. Genis shook his head.

"No. I asked but we were attacked," he paused and looked up at his sister, "she's also rather weak. I don't think she's a traveler."

Raine nodded, tilting her head slightly as she thought of what to do. "Go make her some tea, I'll talk to her." Genis nodded and went further into the house.

Sierra fidgeted slightly under Raine's scrutinizing eyes. Man, she liked the Professor, she really did but this was a little nerve wracking. Raine's icy blue eyes were narrowed thoughtfully and Sierra knew she was awaiting an explanation. Raine Sage sure could be intimidating, Sierra shuddered.

"Ah, I don't... exactly... know where I'm from," Sierra said awkwardly. When the Professor merely lifted her eyebrows skeptically, Sierra went on. "Um... all I remember is that I was with my friend Victoria, and we were going for a walk," she started, sticking with the truth as best she could. "But we were attacked," she narrowed her eyes, trying to look as though she were struggling to remember. "That's about all I remember, because when I woke up I was in Iselia Forest and Vicky was no where in sight." She bit her lip as she cast her gaze away from the older woman's harsh one.

Would Raine believe her? Would she help her out? Oh man, Sierra couldn't remember a time when she was so nervous. When she was a kid, she used to lie a lot and it was something she was always getting in trouble for. But as she reached her teen years, lying had become difficult for her and her friends would always know when she was doing so. It was something she'd hated.

She was shaking again, she noticed bitterly, so she quickly twined her hands into her lap to try and stop. Damn it... why must Raine be so frightening?! I'm not going to hurt her or her brother! In fact, both are my favourite characters in the game! Gahhh... I so wanna go home!

Raine pursed her lips, watching the girl as she trembled. Her story was strange, if slightly forced. She supposed she would have to accept it for the mean time though. She relaxed her stance with a nod, sighing as she brushed her bangs out of her face.

"Relax," she said, "we aren't going to hurt you."

Jeez, I understand that she's a very skeptical woman, but could she cut me some - Sierra's eyes widened and she swung her gaze back to the half-elf healer in surprise mixed with relief. Really? Raine! You're the best! "I'm sorry," she murmured, realizing that Raine must think her a chicken. "It's been a crazy few hours, I guess. I'd be dead if it weren't for Genis," she gave a nervous laugh as she forced herself to calm down.

It's not like being in Sylvarant is necessarily a bad thing. If you disregard the crazy prejudices' against half-elves, the psychopathic Desians, Yggdrasil the insane take over and destroy the world villain and Kratos the scary Mercenary. Kratos was also her favourite character, more so when she found out his real identity. She was especially happy for Lloyd, but would have preferred a better ending. Like say, Kratos stayed in Aselia to enjoy a new life with his son and someday grandchildren.

She pulled herself out of her thoughts quickly, looking back at the Professor with a hesitant, small smile. She couldn't believe this was happening!

Sierra shook her head, looking at the ground awkwardly. She liked where this was going. She did, after-all, need a place to sleep right? "That's right," she murmured shyly, rubbing her arm out of habit. Her head ache was gone, but now her arms held a slight numbing pain. From that wolf? It had rabies didn't it? And it bit her... what if she got rabies now? Oh man... could Raine heal rabies? Or would she go bat-shit crazy before ever making it home?! Stupid wolf...

She blinked to rid herself of the irrelevant thoughts and watched as Genis came back into the room, setting a cup of steaming liquid in front of her. "Thank you," she said, smiling slightly.

"I suppose you can stay here for now," Raine stated, receiving a surprised look from Genis who had sat in another chair. "She has no where to go and no money," she told him. "I'll have her help me out at the school as payment," she reasoned. Genis nodded sipping from his own cup of tea.

"Alright, you wait here. I'll make you a spot on the couch," the woman nodded to Sierra as she went into the next room.

Holy crap. Raine has just been upped on my list of favourite characters, Sierra thought in awe as she stared at the spot where the Professor had been. She opened her mouth, a belated thanks waiting to escape but no sound came. She brought her hands to her chest, wincing slightly at the leftover numbness in her arms. Stupid wolf, she repeated.

Genis was staring at her, his head tilted slightly. Sierra returned his stare nervously before reaching for her cup. She smelled it as she brought it to her lips and nearly sighed. It didn't smell like the tea she was used to (Tetley Original) but it had a very soothing, natural smell to it that made her relax almost immediately. She took a sip, allowing the warm liquid to slide down her throat gratefully. "It's very good," she smiled. Tetley didn't compare at all to this.

She didn't hold back a sigh this time, her eyes fluttering closed in relief. She was tired. It was late, after-all. She was about ninety-nine percent sure now that this wasn't a dream. Everything she was feeling was far too real for it to be. But she couldn't help but wonder what had happened to Vicky and the dogs. Was Vicky here too? Was she all right?

This is all Vicky's fault. She jinxed us when she mentioned us coming to Sylvarant... All her fault.
