Vicky shook her head, "No, I think I'd be younger than you. Let's see," she grabbed a stick from the pile and started scratching in the dirt next to her.

"Three sixty-five times eighteen," she continued to mouth the numbers and directions to herself as they came. "Then sixty-five seventy divided by seven sixty-five," she paused as she tried to straighten the numbers in her head.

"Seven?" she guessed and did the multiplication off to the side. "No, eight," she corrected herself with a shake of her head. She stuck the number on top of the equation and continued.

After a bit, she leaned back and looked at her answer. "Eight point five eight eight something. Yeah," she nodded, "in this world, I was born about eight and a half years ago. Plus the months between my birthday and yesterday but whatever. That doesn't really matter." She then looked up and met Sheena's stare, "What?"

Sheena blinked again and shook her head, "Nothing. Just uh... wow. Your writing looks weird. Is that from your world as well?" Not just the writing, Sheena thought to herself. The numbers and the calculations... Sheena never was good with numbers. Whatever Vicky just drew in the dirt looked like nonsense to the ninja.

A thought occurred to her suddenly and she voiced it before Vicky could reply, "Wait. You're also a half-elf. Half-elves age differently than us." She tilted her head. The whole thing seemed messed up and wild.

Vicky's eyes widened, "Right," the word came out in a rush and suddenly the metallic scent registered again as her ear twitched, " I forgot."

She looked back down to her numbers and nodded as she remembered Sheena's question, "The digits are standard back home despite language barriers. Virtually everyone understands them. And this is the standard way to write English." She wrote the word out for reference the leaned back so the woman could see it.

Sheena studied the writing with her head still tilted, "Ah yeah. It's similar to ours," she said as she drew the word 'Tethe'alla' in the dirt. "English? What's that?"

"It's what we're speaking," she said, "that's what it's called on Earth, though each of the languages have their own word for it."

She tilted her head in thought, "I guess it would be called Tethe'allan here."

Sheena nodded, "That's right." She gave a yawn as she set her bowl aside. She'd find water to wash it in after Vicky went to sleep.

Corrine popped up suddenly, "You said you don't have elves, right? Do you have summon spirits?" he asked curiously, blinking at Vicky.

Vicky shook her head. "We don't even have mana," she replied, "at least, I don't think so. Civilization there is more oriented towards science and technology rather than the existence of magic."

"A world without mana?" Sheena gasped. "But that's impossible. The world would wither and die. We have technology here that we rely on but we'd still be nothing without mana."

"That's because everything's adapted to the presence of mana uses it in any way it's needed," Vicky paused and looked back towards the forest. "That's probably why there're leaves in all of the darkness in there," she added.

"On Earth, the sun is the food source for plants," she explained, "If there's no sun, you could water the thing as much as you'd like but it still won't survive past sprouting."

"So your sun is like our mana?" Sheena asked thoughtfully. "I can't imagine a world without mana though."

Vicky shrugged and went back to her stew, downing it quickly since it had cooled. "It's just the way it is," she said and set the bowl aside.

Sheena still had questions but knew the girl needed her sleep. Thus, she stretched and stood up. "I'm gunna go find some water. Corrine, you stay here. You should get some rest, Vicky."

Vicky nodded and situated herself into the most comfortable position she could find. She ended up half on her back and half on her side, facing away from the heat of the fire.

Sheena watched the light coming up over the horizon with a blank expression. She yawned and wiped her eyes and then chanced a look over her shoulder at the smoldering fire and slumbering half-elf. It was still too early to leave. She'd give it another couple of hours.

It had been an uneventful night. No monsters, no bandits, just the sound of the crackling fire and shimmer of the twinkling stars above. She'd nearly fallen asleep a couple of times but managed to keep herself awake. Corrine helped.

She glanced again at the half-elf and wondered if her leg would be feeling better today.

The sound of a flushing toilet woke her up and she blinked at the green wall in front of her. Clanging came from the kitchen downstairs, Eric was preparing breakfast. Her stomach growled at the thought and she groaned, stretching her arms up and rolling over. Food

She got up from the bed and retrieved her glasses from the floor. Looking up, she saw that Sierra's door was still closed, indicating that she had yet to get up. Such was the routine.

In the kitchen, Eric greeted her with a loud 'good morning' and she gave her own greeting while reaching for the pill bottle in the corner. Then a blast of wind rattled the windows and she jumped at the suddenness if it. Wasn't it calm a moment ago?

"Where is she?" Vicky turned around to see Lynn standing in the door way. Vicky frowned and didn't answer. There was something strange about the way she was watching her.

"Where's Sierra?"

Sheena sighed, leaning back on her hands and staring at the sky once more. "Is it gunna rain?" she thought aloud, noticing the smoky gray clouds with a frown. "I sure hope not..."

Corrine agreed with a hum from her side.

"Isn't she upstairs?" Vicky tilted her head in question, her brow furrowing.

Lynn didn't look like she'd heard, repeating her question. Vicky could only shake her head as her confusion grew. Sierra wasn't in the house?

There was a twinge in her leg and everything seemed to waver. She gasped. That hurts, that hurts! Why does it hurt?

Sheena looked over as Vicky gasped and then glanced at the sky once more. "Yeah, it's almost time to go. Guess I should wake her," she murmured and stood up with a moan. She called Vicky's name as she approached.

"Faah!" Vicky jerked violently and yelled as the bandages pulled on her bite. She groaned and rolled onto her elbows, keeping her leg off the ground as much as possible. "Fuck," she hissed, "that hurts."

Sheena grimaced, muttered "I bet," and then dug through her bag before tossing a gel at the girl. "Here ya go, drink up."

The bottle landed next to her arm and she grabbed it and downed it one go. After a moment, the pain was down to a dull twinge. She'd found her new Advil.

She then sighed and looked at Sheena. "Can you help me up?" she asked with a slight smile.

The ninja offered her hand while surveying their surroundings. "We should get to Sybak by noon. Though I don't like the look of those skies..."

"It's probably going to rain," said Corrine who could feel the moisture in the air.

Vicky grabbed her weapon as she stood with Sheena's help then took a deep breath through her nose once she was steady. The smell of rain water was faint but there and she nodded. "Yeah, it's gonna. I can smell it," she confirmed and sighed.

"We're close to the ocean, aren't we?" she asked.
